Things You Would Love In a Punjabi Wedding Ceremony
Punjabi Sikhs are known for extravagance and jubilant celebrations as far as wedding ceremonies are concerned. Weddings are marked with several rituals and small functions before and after the actual ceremony. Most of the rituals and functions are associated with singing, dancing and loud celebrations.
People generally think that Punjabi Sikhs are pompous, loud and extravagant but that is not true. This is basically a fun loving community, but they are far more expressive than other ethnic groups in India. So let’s discuss different aspects of such ceremonies.
Punjabis do not like the somber mood even on serious occasions. They want the parties and functions to be colorful. Beautiful ladies are dressed in designer Punjabi outfits such as lehnga chunnis and heavily embroidered bridal suits. The men are dressed in royal medieval dresses such as sherwanis, long blazers and other designer outfits.
The Punjabi Sikh bride is usually draped in either a traditional saree or sequined lehnga choli. In rural areas people still prefer the traditional salwar kurti. Punjabis love silk and both men and women wear outfits made of silk.
Punjabis exhibit flamboyant dances on popular Punjabi and Bollywood tunes. Singers display their singing skills. Warmth and friendliness is the essence of such functions and you will feel it as soon as you enter the venue. As stressed earlier, Punjabis don’t like somber mood and that’s the reason laughter is the essential element of such functions. People are quite talkative and they would love to chat on such occasions.
Don’t forget to notice the million dollar smile on the faces of beautiful girls, especially the friends of the Punjabi Sikh bride. The bright side of Punjabi weddings is that even the elderly people forget all formality and join the dancing crowds. In fact, people love to watch the elderly people dancing with the jubilant crowds of friends and relatives.
In fact, elderly people are an essential part of the events and engagements with younger lots. People expect them to sing and dance. They are supposed to bless the bride and groom during most of the pre-wedding and post wedding rituals.
Music is mostly melodious and people participate in it passionately. Bhangra and Giddha are the famous Punjabi dance forms and the women love to exhibit their Bhangra and Giddha skills. It is a feast for the eyes to watch these dance steps. You will not be able to spot a single dull moment in the entire ceremony or even during rituals. If it sounds ostentatious for you, you might be wrong. It is not sexist either.
This is the way they celebrate their functions as one of the most passionate, expressive and fun loving communities in India. This is just unrestrained and unadulterated fun, you can have in an Indian wedding ceremony. Even Canadian and other foreign nationals love to participate in NRI matrimony.
